The age that we are living in, is facing a grave ecological crisis, which has been created by the imbalance between the pollution, resource and the environment. A biological community is one, which is a balanced community. Its successful survival depends upon the interaction and interrelationship between the physical environment and the living environment and the living beings themselves.
To increase the food production, man has used powerful synthetic pesticides and inorganic fertilizers. Such modern, farming practices have brought in the green revolution, but have caused grave environment problems. The non-biodegradable chlorinated hydrocarbons like DDT are used as pesticides and found in every living plant and animal around the world.
The crisis of pollution verses food and resource alone would be a massive challenge for mankind to face, over the next twenty to thirty years. Rapid industrialization and modern technology have led to serious deterioration of the environment.
As a factor in human health and well-being, environmental pollution is a serious cause for alarm, specially in developed countries where most of it is produced.
Air pollution in highly industrialized cities has increased and become the main cause of respiratory diseases. It damages trees, crops as well as human tissue. Water pollution also causes a serious threat. The common pollutants present in water are insecticides, industrial wastes, sewage, fertilizer and many other kinds of wastes. Polluted waters can cause a large number of water borne diseases.
The noise of traffic in big cities, the aeroplanes and noisy machine take their toll in affecting the efficiency of human hearing. Modern life has become very noisy, which has in turn reduced the span and efficiency of human hearing.
Mans impact on his environment has reached a state, when ‘pollution’ in the usual sense is only a part of the problem. His activities now present a graver danger to the entire Earth, which nourishes and support us all.
